The authors share just the right amount of detail to build tension and allow the reader to feel the same passion the couple is experiencing.

Even the other patrons in the restaurant notice what’s between them.Īt one point Evie describes how Carter “pulls his lower lip into his mouth and sucks it, watching. Evie says “my blood hum just being near him, and I can’t stop grinning.” Later, “I swear I feel every millimeter of contact between us.” He exudes sex. Their first date is brimming with potential. Their text messages to each other are eager and full of flirtation. They’re both likeable and relatable and funny. It all works to reveal an instant mutual attraction and interest. The words and reverence with which each describes the other. Carter’s charisma Evie’s physical response to his gaze and attention. The tension borne of his physical proximity at the drinks table his response to and admiration to to Evie’s wild laugh.
Evie and Carter’s connection is immediate. This book is an excellent example of how to establish believable chemistry between two characters. I don’t do it justice here, but it is seriously cute and perfect in how they interact and respond to realizing they’re being set up. Evie and Carter bump into each other at the booze table and realize they have matching costumes- he’s dressed as Harry Potter. Of course she isn’t her friends are scheming to set her up. She thinks she’s the only single person at the party and makes a beeline to the booze. Evie, dressed as Hermione Granger, goes to what turns out to be a couples a costume party hosted by her friend and former coworker. Tropes: Enemies-to-loves, forced proximity-ishįirst of all, this book has the best meet-cute of any that I’ve read.
